Private Museums and Heritage Houses are valuable individual contributions to exhibit many objects and treasures of folklore and national heritage that play a vital role in the preservation of Oman’s national heritage.
BAIT AL ZUBAIR MUSEUM

The house is owned by Al Zubair bin Ali, who built it in 1914 as a residence for him. In 16/12/1995 the house was rebuilt in the same original style in order to be an Omani heritage museum. Bait Al Zubair is a private museum that opened its beautifully carved wooden doors to the public, dicated to showcasing important ethnographic artefacts that reflect the highly specialized skills and rich cultural heritage of Oman’s society, Bait Al Zubair also displays outstanding private collections of the Al Zubair family, inclusive of information about the Al Busaidi dynasty, with magnificent examples of khanjars (Omani dagger), traditional swords and firearms, ancient jewellery, and male and female attire.

Located in Madinate Al Sultan Qaboos, Next to the Arab Open University. Small in its area, yet large in the quality and diversity of its artefacts, the Bait Adam museum is a treasure-trove of Omani antiquity, reflecting on the country’s rich past, and takes visitors into 5000 years of the Sultanate’s history. The museum is considered to be the holder of one of the finest coin collections of Oman and its dominions.

This museum is concerned by introducing the Omani heritage, culture and traditions, which tells the story of the Omani people who witnessed the transition to the Renaissance Era (1950–1975 CE). The museum has three sections: The Old House, Clothes Museum and Modern Art Museum.

Opened in 2025, the exterior of the museum building is designed in the traditional architectural style of the region (Old Salalah), with careful attention to the interior design, which features handcrafted ceilings and floors made of old wood. The Dhofar Private Museum consists of a two floors that is divided into four environmental themes (coastal – urban – rural – desert), in addition to 14 diverse sections including:

GENERATION CONTINUITY MUSEUM

It was established by Salim Al Amari in honor of his late mother to showcase her biography in collecting and preserving artifacts. She was famous for her distinctive crafting skills in silverware and rare types of gold and jewelries. Also the museum exhibits other heritage and handicrafts collection such us: pottery, swords, fishing and agriculture tools, etc.

The museum exhibits the biography of the founder Ahmed Bin Norook. The museum consists of documents gallery, Ahmed Bin Norook gallery, the Izza gallery, the royal gallery and the world gallery. It displays a collection of heritage artifacts including, rare photos, heritage furniture, women sewing and knitting tools, old stamps, etc.

Opened in 2024, the museum includes three halls: The first is a hall for screening geological films about the history of Oman’s land. The second and third halls are dedicated to geological exhibits. The first of these showcases items from the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras, such as dinosaur bone fossils, fossilized tree wood, and a diverse collection of trilobites from the Cambrian, Ordovician, and Permian periods. It also includes a rock polished by the waves of the ancient Tethys Ocean from the Jurassic period, and formations of ophiolite rocks.The final hall is devoted to marine life from the Cretaceous period and more recent geological ages. It features fossils of mammals that lived in Oman between 53 and 21 million years ago, as well as a meteorite, a collection of Omani stones and minerals, and fossil samples that explain how fossils are formed over time.

BAIT AL-GHASHAM MUSEUM

It is an old house, which is one of the most important monuments in the Wilayat Wadi Al-Ma’awel. It was owned by Sayyid Mohammed bin Ahmed bin Nasser Al Ghasham Al Busaidi, then owned by Sayyid Ahmed bin Hilal bin Ali Al Busaidi, and recently owned and restored by Al Ghasham Institution. The museum has many distinctive and beautiful rooms, al subah and al sablah, fortified rooms and observation towers, large courtyard, a well and storage areas.

The Gateway of the Past Museum was officially opened in 2023 within a historic house. It features nine halls that showcase a diverse collection of archaeological and heritage artefacts, including weaponry, coins, manuscripts, documents, jewellery, silverware, household utensils, pottery, copper utensils, and more.

Opened in 2023, the Bait Alsharaf Museum is situated within an ancient heritage house in Al-Aqr village. It comprises several rooms which showcase various aspects of traditional life. For example, one room exhibits doors that were used in the past, while another room demonstrates the process of extracting and manufacturing rose water, which visitors can experience during the spring season. The museum also features a room displaying old photos of the village and another room exhibiting a collection of heritage items.

Established in 2023 AD, the Bait Al Minzfa Museum consists of two halls: the Majzi Hall and the Al-Busaidi Hall. It presents a range of artefacts documenting and narrating the history of human life in the Sultanate of Oman before 1970 AD. The collection includes palm and wooden artefacts, traditional weapons, correspondence, historical documents, speeches, and sermons, some of which date back over hundred and fifty years.
NIZWA MUSEUM

Opened in 2023 AD, the Nizwa Museum comprises nine halls that showcase a variety of heritage items, such as pottery, jewellery, copper tools, palm fronds, woodwork, and documents. The museum offers visitors an immersive historical journey by providing insights into Omani heritage.

The museum is named after the Darwaza, which is an arch attached upper the main gate. The museum is an old heritage house that contain all aspects of old houses, it has a ground and a rooftop yards, a well and kitchen. The house was a residential and military facility, and it was designed to allow residents and their troops to defend the house from unexpected attacks.

It was opened in 2025, as it was built during the rule of the Yaruba dynasty more than 400 years ago. It was the headquarters of the sheikhdom of the state of Al Hamra. The house consists of two floors divided into four halls: The Omani kitchen hall, the dates and date molasses production hall, the apparel hall, and the Omani council hall. The house is a tourist attraction that reflects the heritage and traditional Omani life.

AL-AFIYA HERITAGE MUSEUM

It is a heritage museum that includes various heritage collections, which displays more than three thousand heritage objects, some of them dating back to more than three centuries. It contains several rooms, such as the traditional Omani majlis that made of palm trees, traditional agricultural and irrigation tools, and antique wooden doors. The other rooms display a collection of ancient coins, old household tools, weapons, pottery and other inherited heritage objects.

Established in 2023, the Al-Hamidi Heritage Museum boasts a large exhibition hall where a wide array of heritage items are on display. Visitors can explore pottery, palm fronds, leather goods, Bedouin women’s adornments, jewellery, marine tools, ancient date and honey products, books and documents, handkerchiefs, and old weapons.
